Yes, the assembly location is different from what it has been for the past several years. Below is the reason why.
Bikes for Kids Assembly planning and coordination for this November has been less organized and predictable than in the past due to the RABA Foundation not fully understanding in mid-September that Toolbank was not able to store bikes after our bike assembly. That caused a mad scramble by Kim Moore, Andrew Mann, and other club members to find a new host site ASAP.
Then, over a week ago, it was announced that a new host site, Henrico PAL, had been found. Then Henrico PAL and Kim had a deep discussion to review building requirements to make the delivery of 26 pallets of bikes doable. Much to everyone’s mutual dismay, it was realized that H-PAL’s buildings are better suited to being classrooms and an auditorium rather than a working warehouse.
So, H-PAL did an extraordinary thing – within a couple of hours of that planning session. They contacted a “friend”, the Richmond International Raceway (RIR)! H-PAL asked RIR if they would be the host site for Bikes for Kids this year! RIR said yes, and fast forward to today: the RABA Foundation and H-PAL met with the RIR Events Director to assess the available spaces and building infrastructure. Their spaces are large and secure, with easy access for the delivery truck, our volunteers, and for our volunteers to pick up the bikes on December 6. They have lights, electricity, and restrooms for our use. So we shook hands and it’s a-go!
So, our November 1 assembly effort will be at Richmond International Raceway, 600 E. Laburnum Ave, Richmond, VA 23222. We still have some small details to work out but nothing that stops the assembly.
