Code of Conduct and Expectations

RABA’s expectations about members’ conduct can be encapsulated by two phases: (1) Do the right thing; and (2) Don’t be a jerk. More formally, we as an association always expect our fellow members to:

  1. uphold the highest standard of ethical behavior and personal conduct
  2. respect the personal dignity of others and to refrain from all forms of harassment, intimidation, and discrimination
  3. ride and encourage riding in a manner that is safe and effective for themselves and any others around them (i.e., other riders, walkers, runners, motorists, etc.)
  4. be good stewards and guests to the entities (i.e., businesses, churches, convenience stores, parks, etc.) that support us. Respecting their premises/rules for use, and promoting positive behaviors helps ensure their continued support.

When cyclists are observed riding unsafely, the initial intervention is coaching, delivered in a non-confrontational manner by an experienced cyclist or the ride leader. This coaching aims to educate the cyclist and curb unsafe behavior. Persistent unsafe behavior will be reported to the Board.

Certain complaints, such as harassment, intimidation, or discrimination, should not be left for the victim to resolve with the perpetrator. If these situations occur during a bicycle ride, the ride leader should be notified. For minor issues, the leader should address the alleged perpetrator directly. If these situations occur during member to member interactions, someone on the Board should be notified for further follow-up and resolution. If informal resolution is unsuccessful or if the offense is serious, the complainant should submit a written complaint for Board investigation and appropriate action, with the respondent given a chance to respond.
