Description: RABA's Bike MS Team invites the club to join us for our first spring training ride. The club is invited to join Team RABA for a 34-mile group ride departing from Center of the Universe Brewing Company. Most importantly, we will have a C pace — we want everyone to feel welcome and included.

As always, you do not need to be on RABA’s Bike MS team to participate. All riders are welcome. That said, if you’re interested in learning more about Team RABA or joining our 50-rider Bike MS team, you can do so here: https://events.nationalmssociety.org/teams/92009

All paces are invited and we will group by pace at the start.

There will be a rest stop at Studley General Store (5407 Studley Rd Mechanicsville, VA 23116 ).

Stick around afterward for drinks at Center of the Universe Brewing Company.

Description: Typically, this is a 76-80 mile ride; however, many of us (like me) are not in our Spring/Summer form yet, so we'll have options for distance and pace. Exact miles & pace will be determined by the group. We anticipate an 80-mile group and a 40-50 mile group with paces ranging between 16-17 and 18+.

There will be a minimum of 3 official stops on each route, with public restrooms and bottle refill availability.

Start/finish: Four Mile Creek Park, 3256 New Market Road Henrico, VA 23231

C+ (14 mph) 10 am 29 2/3 TBD Jan M Waldron, 804-298-8231, alienaardvark@gmail.com

All Riders: Ride times listed are departure times.

Description and Directions:
Ride/Parking will start with parking down by the Lake (Coordinates 37.528262,-78.270419).

As Bear Creek State Park is a Virginia State Park, you will either need a State Park Parking pass, or stop at the entrance office (Coordinates= (37.532025,-78.273210) and pay $7 per car. You could ride these roads with a road bike with minimum 28mm tire width, but wider is much better.

Cell phone coverage can be spotty so load coordinates prior to leaving civilization. Pace for gravel rides is it’s own animal If you average 20mph on the road you will typically average 16mph on gravel. If you average 14-16mph on the road you will typically average 10-11mph on gravel.

After the ride, there is the option of stopping at Fine Creek Brewery (https://finecreekbrewing.com/) for lunch/libation.

Cue Sheets:

March 24 (Tuesday) Surry to Smithfield Chowder Chaser
Pace Time Miles Terrain Stops Leader
B+ 10 am 47 or 37 5 1 Jo Ann Gordon, 804-503-0166, vagordon92@gmail.com

Description: Burn some calories before enjoying lunch at Smithfield Station! Both Rides Depart from the Surry County Government Center: 45 School Street, Surry, VA 23883. Park in the gravel parking lot. You need to allow proper time to arrive and get yourself ready. Wheels will begin rolling at 10am. (for reference: google maps has the travel time as 1hr 21min from the Costco on Broad Street in Richmond to the Surry Government Center).

Be a good rider and have the GPX downloaded. I will have very few cue sheets available, and your buddies do not want to boss you around all day!

All paces are welcome. Karl and I are riding the 47-mile route. I am looking for ride leaders for both rides and all paces. There will be an update to the ride details on the message board two weeks prior to the date. If you can lead a pace, please email me: vagordon92@gmail.com or text 804-503-0166. If you text me; tell me who you are!

Both Rides do a turnaround at Smithfield Station. Dine at Smithfield Station - Riverside Dining in Virginia. See their website for a menu. I will alert the restaurant to our plans on or around 3/20. Please remember when we get there to avoid restaurant confusion and chaos:

  1. Enter via the front for seating. DO NOT go directly around back and seat yourself. Please group up with those around you and do not keep adding to tables to make one ginormous table.
  2. Bring cash in small bills so you can settle your bill easily with the server. Yes, they take credit cards, but when you have bunches of people cashing out with credit cards it gets chaotic and takes a bit of time.

March 25 (Wednesday) Ride Around Chippokes State Park
Pace Time Miles Terrain Stops Leader
B+ 10 am 35 4 0 Jo Ann Gordon, 804-503-0166, vagordon92@gmail.com

Description: This ride will depart from the Chippokes Visitor Center parking lot at 10:00am. Address: 695 Chippokes Park Rd., Surry, VA 23883. Follow signs to the Visitor Center Parking Lot. Again: allow some time to get there; this is about 1.5 hours from Richmond. All paces are welcome but may be self-led. Please download the GPX link. I will have very few cue sheets. Please RSVP to me via email vagordon92@gmail.com or text to 804-503-0166 so that I know you are coming and let me know if you can lead a pace. There may be treats after the ride as I imagine this will be a low attendance ride. Look for a message board update on or around 3/15/24.

Keep in mind there is a fee to enter the park. Have $7 cash on hand to use the honor box if needed OR a recent REI Store (not online) receipt for entry to the park. I called Chippokes State Park Office to verify that the REI receipt program is still in place for 2026 entry to Virginia State Parks. Simply enclose your REI store receipt in the honor box envelope. They do not honor online receipts. I may or may not have treats for us after the ride! Bonus points to those who ride both days!
